Seed system and seed quality of Kersting’s groundnut in Benin

Swift delivery of quality seeds to farming communities is a fundamental step in mainstreaming the value chain orphan crops. The objective this study was characterise seed production and systems Kersting’s groundnut (KG) [Macrotyloma geocarpum (Harms) Maréchal & Baudet] their influence on Benin. A survey conducted among 305 farmers from major KG growing areas total 60 samples were collected different sources (farmer own seed, local markets agro-dealers) for tests. results showed that sources, acquisition modes perceived differed significantly (P<0.01) gender groups with experience. Majority (74.93%) acquired stored non-hermetic conditions as poor compared sourced stock hermetic conditions. Yet, analysis revealed no differences (P<0.05) storage methods. Less than 20% tested met national standards suggesting an important constraint current system which may justify reported low yield crop failure.
